Products & Services

Customized solutions for electrical transmission and distribution: power and distribution transformers, load break switches, and the service to keep them running.

From Transmission to Distribution

Indonesia’s transmission lines carry 500 kV, 275 kV or 150 kV at 50 Hz. Power transformers convert this to 20 kV for industry and distribution, and distribution transformers convert 20 kV to 400 V for homes, shops and factories.

How We Build a Transformer

Every stage happens in Lippo Cikarang, under one quality system, with inspection gates between them.

  1. Design

Engineering uses 3D design software and simulation tools: finite element analysis for tank stress, computational fluid dynamics for radiator and fan cooling, and a temperature-rise calculation on every design. Targets are high short-circuit strength, low partial discharge, low noise and low loss.

    Design
  2. Core

Distribution transformers use wound cores of cold-rolled grain-oriented silicon steel, annealed and formed for low iron loss and noise. Power transformer cores are stacked from laser-scribed laminations with a step-lap joint for a smooth flux path.

    Core
  3. Windings

Semi-automated machines produce tens of thousands of distribution windings a year in copper or aluminum wire and foil. For power transformers, two vertical and four horizontal winding machines produce disc-type windings from continuously transposed conductor.

  4. Assembly and Drying

Active parts are dried in a vapor phase drying oven, then tanked within hours and filled with oil under vacuum so the insulation is fully impregnated. Assembly takes place in a clean, controlled hall to meet strict partial discharge limits.

  5. Testing

Our laboratory tests electrical products up to 161 kV: lightning impulse, induced voltage with partial discharge measurement, temperature rise, SFRA, zero-sequence impedance and oil analysis, with calibrated instruments.

Engineered Before It Is Built

Every transformer is simulated and checked on screen before any steel is cut. Our engineers use 3D design software, finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics to balance six targets against each other.

  • High Mechanical Strength
  • High Short-Circuit Withstand
  • Low Partial Discharge
  • Low Noise
  • Low Losses
  • Low Temperature Rise

Temperature Rise, Calculated on Every Design

Heat is what ages paper insulation, so we find the overheating risk before manufacture, to the applicable standard and the customer’s specification.

  1. LossesNo-load and load losses from the electrical design.
  2. Oil RiseTop-oil and average-oil rise from total losses and the cooling design: radiators, fans, ONAN or ONAF.
  3. Winding GradientWinding-to-oil gradient from current density, conductor and insulation build, and oil ducts.
  4. Hot SpotAverage winding rise plus a hot-spot allowance gives the hottest point of the insulation.
  5. Check LimitsCompared with the standard and the customer’s limits, and redesigned if the margin is short.
  6. Life ForecastThe insulation aging rate at the hot-spot temperature gives the expected insulation life.

Limits Every Design Is Checked Against

Temperature riseIEC 60076-2IEEE C57.12.00
Top-oil rise60 K65 K
Average winding rise65 K65 K
Hot-spot rise78 K80 K

Customer limits apply where they are tighter, for example a higher design ambient.

From temperature to service life. The hot-spot temperature sets the insulation aging rate under IEEE C57.91 and IEC 60076-7. From it, our engineers forecast the transformer’s life and confirm it reaches its intended service life at the customer’s load and ambient.

Designed to the Standard Your Project Needs

We design, manufacture and test to the standards of many markets: pole-mounted, pad-mounted, substation, distribution or power, up to 161 kV and 150 MVA. Through our sister factory Shenchang Electric in Taiwan, we also build to Taiwan Power Company specifications.
